Canadian War Museum National Collection
The Canadian War Museum’s national collection consists of military artifacts, archival and photographic material, and works of art representing the Canadian military experience. It promotes understanding of Canada’s military history on personal, national and international levels.
Since its inception over a century ago, the collection has become an internationally recognized compilation of approximately 500,000 military-related artifacts as well as approximately 860 linear meters of archival material. Canadian War Museum exhibitions, both in-house and traveling, and loans to other institutions use the collection to show the human experience of war and its impact on Canada and Canadians, past and present. Museum visitors learn that Canadians have shaped, and were shaped by war, conflict, and peace support operations.
The collection is composed of two main components: the artifact collection and the archival collection. The artifact collection is sub-divided into the following groups: Arms and Technology, Dress and Insignia, and Art and Memorials which includes the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art. The George Metcalf Archival Collection is sub-divided into textual Archives, Image Archives and Oral Histories. Additionally, the Hartland Molson Library Collection has published histories, rare books, and military, government and industry literature.
Digital Museums Canada
Digital Museums Canada (DMC) is the largest national investment program dedicated to supporting digital projects. We help build digital capacity in Canadian museums and heritage, cultural and Indigenous organizations, and provide expert guidance in digital accessibility, user experience, and inclusive design.
DMC is managed by the Canadian Museum of History with the financial support of the Government of Canada.
Through a Call for Proposals and independent Advisory Committee, DMC awards investments between $25,000 and $250,000 for online projects in two streams, Digital Projects and Community Stories. Since 2014, DMC has invested nearly $20 million in more than 240 projects, giving people living in Canada unique access to diverse stories and experiences.
