This is the tombstone of Canada’s Unknown Soldier. It marked the grave of one of the 6,846 Canadians buried during the First World War as “unknown soldiers,” meaning their bodies were recovered but their identities could not be confirmed.
The soldier whose grave was marked with this tombstone was removed from his resting place in Cabaret Rouge Cemetery, near Vimy Ridge, and re-interred at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Canada’s National War Memorial on 28 May 2000. The tombstone was donated to the Canadian War Museum, where it is displayed prominently in Memorial Hall.
