This photograph shows a group of Japanese Canadians at the formal unveiling of the Vimy Memorial on 26 July 1936. More than 200 Japanese Canadians served in the First World War.
The Vimy Memorial is Canada’s primary national memorial overseas and it marks the Battle of Vimy Ridge, fought in France from 9 to 12 April 1917. The battle has become an important symbol for Canada, representing unity and pride, but also grief, remembrance, and commemoration.
