Mary Espeseth

Made by Mary Espeseth,
Alexis Reserve, Alberta.

Glass beads, smoked brain-tanned moosehide.

"I remember my mother used to make this same style of moccasin. For trimmings she would use silk thread or dyed horse mane. Hardly anyone makes this style of moccasin anymore, nor do they use silk or horse mane for trimmings or designs. I am glad my oldest sister Mary Espeseth still remembers how to make them.... Dr. [David] Suzuki occasionally wears a beaded moosehide jacket that was patterned, designed and constructed by me and my younger sister Vi Mustus. The moosehide was completed and tanned by Rosalie Alexis who also did the beadwork on the jacket. Rosalie Alexis also tanned the moosehide for these moccasins."
