Fishing: The First Signs
hese 10,000-year-old
stone spearheads from Prince Edward Island represent the first
direct archaeological evidence that early coastal peoples
exploited the marine resources of Atlantic Canada. They were
probably used for spearing walrus, seals and other sea mammals.
Descendants of these earliest fishermen are believed to have
hunted along Quebec's Gulf of St. Lawrence coast and adjacent
southern Labrador as early as 9,000 years ago.
