Symbols from the Sea
mulets of fish or
mammals carved in bone, antler, soapstone and ivory may represent
underlying supernatural beliefs used to assist in a successful
hunt or fish catch. It has also been suggested that carvings of
killer whales may have been part of a cult which revered the
killer whale as a formidable hunter. Whatever their significance,
these amulets underline the special relationship between the
people and their environment.
