capture most sea mammals changed with the introduction of guns during
the eighteenth century. Although guns replaced harpoons and spears,
a barbed spear or gaff was still used in the traditional manner to
haul sea mammals into canoes. Iron and copper pots replaced ceramic
vessels for rendering the animals' fat into oil.
