To Catch a Whale
Swales and Whales: Atlantic Canada's Sea Mammal Harvest

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly ... And God blessed them, saying, 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas ...'
Genesis 1:21-22
(King James or Authorized Version of the Bible)

... The Sea of Whales became a Sea of Slaughter as, one by one, from the greatest to the least, each in turn according to its monetary worth, the several cetacean nations perished in a roaring holocaust fuelled by human avarice.
Farley Mowat, Sea of Slaughter
(Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1984), p. 296.

Whales were killed because whalers had to earn a living. The technology used, however, became too efficient, too destructive. We must learn to control technology; we must learn restraint. Canada ceased whaling in 1972, but a few nations continue the hunt.
