Crockery items decorated with Canadian landscapes were available in a choice of colours. The vast majority were made in England or Scotland.
The scene depicted on the dessert basket and its stand, based on an engraving made in 1830, shows sailing craft and steamships on the St. Lawrence between the banks of Île Sainte-Hélène and (in the distance) Montreal; the traffic depicted includes the British America, a paddle-steamer well-known in its time, which plied the river between Quebec and Montreal.
