Hirschfeld Mack, Ludwig (1895-1965)

German artist Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack painting in his studio; taken in Melbourne, Victoria, c. 1950; donated by the artist's family to the collection of the Australian War Memorial; P004558.001

Born in Frankfurt, Hirschfeld Mack studied in Munich and Stuttgart, and taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar. In September 1940 he arrived in Australia on the Dunera, one of hundreds of German, Austrian and Italian internees. He was placed in internment camps at Hay and Orange, in New South Wales, and Tatura, in Victoria, before enlisting in the army in February 1942. His work shows the influence of his teachers Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer.
