The Royal Canadian Navy expanded dramatically during the Second World War, acquiring ships and recruiting personnel to meet the constantly increasing demands placed upon it. Ships had to be built, repaired, and maintained, and people recruited, trained, and supported.

Foot-Powered Dental Drill

This foot-powered dental drill is an example of the type of equipment used to treat Canadian naval personnel during the Second World War.

A foot pedal (bottom) rotated the wheel (lower centre) that in turn drove a loop of cord that powered the drill (centre left). A series of pulleys and joints allowed the dentist to move the drill into various positions. An electric motor powered another version. The Canadian Dental Corps, which provided dental services to all branches of the Canadian military, operated shore and ship-based clinics for members of the Canadian navy.
