In 1990-1991, as the Cold War was ending, the navy played a central role in Canada's involvement in the United States-led international coalition that ousted Iraqi forces under Saddam Hussein from Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia awarded this medal to members of the coalition forces who participated in the Gulf War and the liberation of Kuwait.
They included Canadian military personnel serving with the Canadian naval taskforce that coordinated the logistics required to support and supply the coalition's large-scale naval operations. Only those serving in defined geographical areas between mid-January and the end of February 1991 were eligible for the medal. Members of the Canadian military may accept the Kuwait Liberation Medal, but they may not wear it on their uniforms because they are only authorized to wear the Canadian Gulf and Kuwait Medal.
