This naval service dress cap carries the badge of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
Many elements of the RNAS uniform followed contemporary naval patterns, including its headwear. This cap, worn by Canadian Flight Sub-Lieutenant Edward Desbarats, is based on the design for officers in the Royal Navy, and features a flying eagle in place of the navy's traditional anchor. Established in 1914 as the air arm of the Royal Navy, the RNAS merged with the Royal Flying Corps in April 1918 to form the Royal Air Force.
