Canada's navy is an important national institution. It is an influential presence in many Canadian communities and is a historic and influential symbol of nationhood. For many Canadians, the navy is a focus of passion, pride, and service.
Maritime industries, including naval shipbuilding, helped make Saint John one of Canada's leading cities.
It remained a supply, manufacturing, and repair facility through most of the twentieth century, constructing nine of the navy's twelve modern Halifax-class patrol frigates in the 1990s. In this 1945 painting of ships in drydock, the vessel marked K456 is HMCS Saint John.
