A long and distinguished combat record is central to the navy's history and traditions. An armed force in support of Canadian national interests, it continues to perform a wide variety of important roles, from war fighting and peace support operations, to disaster relief and search and rescue.
During the Gulf War (1990-1991), naval vessels formed the bulk of Canada's response to Iraqi aggression.
The Canadian navy had previously never sailed into the confined waters of the Persian Gulf, and was not prepared to face Iraq's modern anti-ship missiles. Quickly refitted with defensive weapons, Harpoon missiles, and other equipment, a three-ship task force left Halifax just two weeks after the prime minister had announced Canada's participation. As depicted here by Ted Zuber from the deck of the supply ship, HMCS Protecteur, the destroyer HMCS Terra Nova, has just undergone Replenishment at Sea, or RAS.
