A long and distinguished combat record is central to the navy's history and traditions. An armed force in support of Canadian national interests, it continues to perform a wide variety of important roles, from war fighting and peace support operations, to disaster relief and search and rescue.

The merchant ship sinking in the background is one of hundreds sunk by enemy submarines which, especially when operating in groups, inflicted fearsome damage on Allied vessels. Air force artist Paul Goranson knew this danger first-hand: crossing the Atlantic in March 1943 to assume his duties, his ship was torpedoed and sunk just south of Iceland.
