This is a door from a cattle shed, used as a barrack room in the Canadian army's Kinmel Park camp in Wales. In March 1919, Kinmel was the scene of rioting by Canadian troops frustrated by poor camp conditions and delays in their return to Canada. Two days of rioting left five dead and drew accusations from the British military and civilians that Canadians were ill-disciplined thugs. Canadian military and political authorities fought the hurtful charges, but the reputation of Canadian soldiers had been badly damaged. The riots prompted imperial authorities to quicken the repatriation process.
