Wooden boxes were used to transport rifle and machine-gun ammunition to the front lines. After the boxes had been emptied at the front, they were supposed to have been returned, but soldiers often used them for firewood. Warmer soldiers reported a surprising number of boxes to have been destroyed by shell-fire.
