This poster shows the progress made by a wartime amputee, perhaps the most visible type of war injury. Most disabled soldiers suffered from less physically obvious ailments including long-term illnesses such as tuberculosis, or chronic pain caused by wounds, gas, or prolonged exposure to the harsh conditions of trench life. The phrase "Once A Soldier Always A Man" suggests an additional worry among wounded veterans – that their injuries had left them emasculated.
