This cartoon from The Listening Post is typical of the dark humour published in trench newspapers. It pokes fun at a simple-minded soldier who has mistaken a German grenade for a bottle of alcohol. After pulling the "stopper", the grenade explodes. The punch line is the comment that the "drink [has] some kick to it." Many soldier 'in-jokes' were not meant for civilian consumption. The Listening Post was a popular trench newspaper published by the 7th Battalion.
