In this Certificate for Wounds and Hurts, the Royal Navy Surgeon has noted that pilot Henry Wambolt sustained frost-bite to his nose and face while flying on active service, even while wearing his service goggles. He also determined that Wambolt was not at fault, nor was he drunk at the time. Pilots were issued goggles, special coats, gloves, and boots to guard against the extremely cold temperatures experienced at high altitudes, but frost-bite was still a common ailment.
