Each recruit underwent a medical exam to determine his suitability for service. High standards in 1914 meant that men with poor teeth or flat feet were rejected. By 1916, an army more desperate for soldiers relaxed its medical standards. This medical examination was for George Ormsby, who was wounded during the 1916 Battle of the Somme but survived the war.
