This temperance pledge card issued to members of the 38th Battalion reminded soldiers of their promise to abstain from alcohol. There are no statistics on how many soldiers embraced temperance, but anecdotal evidence suggests the number was low, especially with rum rations viewed by many as a form of medicine.
