Private Walter Herbert Wray drew this explanatory diagram of a rifle grenade. Issued to the infantry from mid-1915, rifle grenades could be fired up to 300 metres, although with little accuracy at the far end of this range. Wray, a bomb thrower in the 13th Canadian Infantry Battalion, also built his own bombs during the war. A plumber and father of three in civilian life, Wray was killed instantly by a shell on 3 June 1916.
