Troops take a break and enjoy a drink outside of the canteen at Valcartier Camp in 1914. Civilian contractors sold food and drink to the soldiers, who complained bitterly about high prices and were known to rush canteens, taking what supplies they thought were owed them. Some troops are wearing sun helmets that would have been issued to militia units before the war for summer manoeuvres.
