At the start of the war, existing units recalled members from across the country. On 9 August 1914, Major McPhail of the 5th Field Company, Canadian Engineers, inquired as to Robert Kane's intent to volunteer, asking him to report to Kingston for service. Kane died of a gunshot wound to the chest on 12 December 1915 and is buried near Ypres, Belgium.
