In this painting, Lieutenant Clifford "Black Mike" McEwen shoots down a German aircraft while on offensive patrol over the Italian front. McEwen shot down 27 enemy planes. During the Second World War, he commanded Canada's No. 6 Group in RAF Bomber Command (1944-1945).
