Injured soldiers lay on stretchers and the walking wounded received aid in this interior view of the main dressing station at 1st Canadian Field Ambulance, Vardencourt Chateau, France. Dressing stations were part of a chain of medical facilities that stretched from the front lines to permanent hospitals in England. Medical personnel at the dressing station assessed the wounded, bandaging some and operating on others. More serious cases were shipped immediately to the rear for treatment.
