Minesweepers were small wooden-hulled craft whose primary responsibility was to find, capture, or destroy naval mines usually laid by enemy forces along the approaches to harbours of in shipping lanes. These vessels were small with a low fuel capacity and could not operate very far from the ports they were protecting, but they helped to defend the east coast, and protect Canadian vessels, from enemy mines.
