The American navy established a seaplane base at Shearwater, Nova Scotia, across the harbour from Halifax, in early 1918. These seaplanes conducted anti-submarine patrols from there until the end of the war, and often in conjunction with naval vessels. This combined air and sea power were a threat to the German U-Boats.
