The crew of HMCS Niobe loads coal in Halifax harbour. Large coal-fired ships like Niobe could not remain at sea for very long without re-fuelling. To supply their navy, the British had built a world-wide network of fortresses, naval bases, and coaling stations, including Halifax and Esquimalt on Canada's east and west coasts.
