This photograph from the personal collection of Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred G. Turner shows a debris-strewn trench ironically named for an upscale London Hotel, the Strand Palace. While in the trench system, soldiers did not spend all of their time at the front. This trench is likely a reserve trench, several kilometres behind the lines. Its walls are not high and the soldiers are very exposed. In the case of attack, these soldiers would have been rushed forward to support those defending the front lines.
