Minister of Militia and Defence Sir Sam Hughes steps off a torpedo boat before proceeding to the Western Front, August 1916. While Hughes had been a driving force at the start of the war, the soldiers in the field, who Hughes still considered his "boys," had tired of him. Many associated Hughes with the disorganization and poor equipment that had marked the early years of the war, and with the failed Ross rifle, which the minister had vigorously championed. By mid-1916, most Canadians no longer saw themselves as part of Sam Hughes's army.
