A soldier stands over the grave of Nursing Sister Edith Cavell. Charged with aiding in the escape of Allied soldiers, Cavell was executed in Belgium by German forces on 12 October 1915. Her death, in the eyes of many in Britain and Canada, was another example of German barbarity. Following the war, Cavell's body was returned to her native England.
