The inclusion of the light Lewis machine-gun at the platoon level from 1915 increased the infantry's firepower. They were an essential component of any attack, allowing the infantry to target enemy strong points and neutralize or suppress them with concentrated fire. The Lewis had a 47-round drum, which could be fired in four to five seconds. Lewis gun teams consisted of at least two soldiers, but sometimes as many as four or five, all members of which would be laden with ammunition.
