This rifle was reinforced with wire to better withstand the shock of firing rifle grenades from its barrel. Grenade launching rifles using a ballistite (smokeless propellant) cartridge, similar to a blank, could launch grenades to 300 metres, allowing the infantry to strike targets out of hand grenade range. The stock of the rifle is inscribed with "RIFLE E.Y. FOR GRENADE FIRING." "E.Y.," or emergency use, means that this rifle should not be used to fire regular ammunition.
