Professor Randal Marlin explores – Recognizing Propaganda: The Hidden Biases in Communication

Professor Marlin puts forward that the media exploit biased, unsubstantiated stories to produce propaganda that is accepted by the public. Focusing on the First World War’s “Corpse Factory” and the 1990–91 Gulf War’s “Incubator Babies”, he will explore how the upsurge in propaganda came with the rise of mass media. This trend is ongoing, he argues, referring to current media treatment of the Bush Administration’s war in Iraq. He will also discuss the role of the Internet in both perpetrating and exposing propaganda.
