War Museum celebrates Canadian-Dutch friendship with family activities

Ottawa, Ontario, May 8, 2007 — The Canadian War Museum, the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Royal Canadian Legion are organizing a number of family activities during the Canadian Tulip Festival to honour the ongoing friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. The activities, scheduled for the first three weekends in May (May 5–6, May 12–13 and May 19–21), are enlightening as well as fun. They’ll help children and adults better understand the efforts of Canadian soldiers who liberated the Netherlands, and the Dutch people’s resulting affection for Canadians.

Every year since 1945, the Netherlands has given the people of Canada thousands of tulip bulbs in thanks for the friendship and military support our country provided during the Second World War.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Friendship Pin – Make a friendship pin or zipper pull inspired by the colours of Canada and the Netherlands.

Message of Friendship – Write a message of friendship to the Dutch in recognition of their ongoing commitment to honour Canada’s role in their country’s liberation.

Hands-on Gear – Handle equipment used by Canadian soldiers in Northwest Europe. Explore the tunics, bayonets, grenades and other equipment.
