Canadian War Museum lecture puts human face on war in Afghanistan

Ottawa, Ontario, May 15, 2007 — Award-winning journalist Stephen Thorne has witnessed and documented the human side of conflict. Join us as he shares his experiences in “War Stories from Afghanistan,” a lecture presented in the Canadian War Museum’s Barney Danson Theatre on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m.

Thorne, a veteran reporter, editor and photographer for the Canadian Press, has accompanied Canadian troops on several combat missions in Afghanistan, and spent over a year documenting combat missions and reconstruction efforts. In his lecture, part of the War Museum’s Building Knowledge series, he will reveal his encounters with human stories of loss, conflict and reconstruction in Canada’s most recent chapter of military history.

Thorne’s photographs and reports, published across Canada and around the world, have won him three National Newspaper Awards as well as the 2002 Ross Munro Media Award for defence reporting. His photographs of Canadian soldiers and Afghans are featured in the Museum’s temporary exhibition Afghanistan: A Glimpse of War.
