Friends of Canadian War Museum receive philanthropy award

Ottawa, Ontario, November 22, 2007 — The Friends of the Canadian War Museum (FCWM) have been recognized for their good work and dedication by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Ottawa Chapter. The Museum’s volunteer organization received the AFP’s 2007 Ottawa Philanthropic Group Award, given to an organization that demonstrates that it cares about society and enhances the quality of life in the community during the AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards gala on November 8, 2007.

The Friends of the CWM support the Museum in its mission to preserve and promote our nation’s military history through various fundraising efforts, volunteer activities and leadership initiatives. They were recognized because, the AFP said, “Out of love for their country’s history, and out of respect for our military’s role in shaping our freedom, this group gives a helping hand and is a loyal friend.”

“The Friends of the Canadian War Museum are very committed in their efforts to preserve Canada’s military history and to help Canadians learn about this important aspect of our national identity,” said Mark O’Neill, Acting Director of the CWM. Angus Brown, President of the FCWM, added : “We are honoured to receive this award as recognition of our efforts from our peers in fundraising. The award nominees and other winners are very distinguished company, and our members will be proud of the award”.

Since its inception in 1985, the Friends have raised more than $1 million through membership dues, donations, auctions and its Adopt-A-Book program. “The funds underwrite Museum projects such as conservation work on First World War paintings, restoration work on military vehicles, and work to preserve the personal stories of veterans and military personnel” noted Francine Brousseau, Vice-President of Development for the Museum. The Friends also support the annual Colonel Douglas H. Gunter History Awards for graduating high school students, and they led the $17 million Passing the Torch Campaign for the design and the development of exhibitions and public programs in the War Museum’s current facilities, which opened on LeBreton Flats in 2005.

While the Friends’ financial contributions represent a significant source of funding for the War Museum and its programs, their contributions of time are also valuable. Together, members provide more than 6,000 volunteer hours to the Museum every year, participating in activities ranging from interviewing veterans and military personnel for the Oral History Project to research and restoration work to assistance in the Military History Research Centre, as interpreters in the galleries and with special events.
