World Press Photo returns to the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, August 5, 2009 — For the second year in a row, the Canadian War Museum is proud to present the award-winning photographs from the prestigious World Press Photo contest for press photography. World Press Photo is a non-profit organization established in the Netherlands in 1955, to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information. It is best known for organizing the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition.

“The winning photographs play an important role in encapsulating issues and events of journalistic importance for that year,” said Mark O’Neill, Director General of the Canadian War Museum. “They also provide our visitors with a view to understanding how these international events can shape Canada’s history and their own place in the world.”
The winning photos in the 2009 contest were selected by an international jury and assembled into a travelling display, which will be visited by more than 2 million people in 80 major cities around the world. The Canadian War Museum is one of two Canadian venues on the international tour.

The winning photographs will be on display in the Canadian War Museum’s Lobby from August 6 to 26. The World Press Photo 09 exhibition is presented in co-operation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Ottawa.

It is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
