World Press Photo returns to the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, August 5, 2010 — For the third year in a row, the Canadian War Museum is proud to present the award-winning photographs from the prestigious World Press Photo contest for press photography.

Established in the Netherlands in 1955, World Press Photo is a non-profit organization which encourages high professional standards in photojournalism and promotes a free and unrestricted exchange of information. It is best known for organizing the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition.

“Programs such as World Press Photo help visitors better understand military history and its role in shaping their lives,” stated Mark O’Neill, Director General of the Canadian War Museum. “The exhibition includes many images from recent and ongoing conflicts and encapsulates issues and events of journalistic importance for that year. They help build upon the War Museum’s post-Cold War exhibitions and highlight how these events have shaped our world.”

The winning photos in the 2010 contest were selected by an international jury and assembled into a travelling display, which will be visited by more than 2 million people in 80 major cities around the world.

The Canadian War Museum is the first of four Canadian venues on the international tour. The winning photographs will be on display in the Museum’s Lobby from August 5 to 29.

The World Press Photo 2010 exhibition is presented in co-operation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Ottawa.

It is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
