Complimentary parking for veterans
at Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, November 5, 2010 — Canada’s veterans can now park for free at the Canadian War Museum, thanks to the Friends of the Canadian War Museum (FCWM). This offer takes effect immediately.

“This is an important gesture for veterans visiting the War Museum, and I am happy that we can once again recognize and honour the sacrifices that these men and women have made,” said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “Congratulations to the Friends of the Canadian War Museum for making it possible.”

Friends of the Canadian War Museum (www.friends-amis.org) is a charitable organization formed in 1985 to support the Canadian War Museum and its activities. It does so through fundraising, outreach and military history research; by providing Museum guides and other volunteer services; and by sponsoring art and artifact restoration as well as other projects.

“We are very proud to make it possible for our veterans to park for free while visiting the War Museum,” said LGen (Ret’d.) Bill Leach, President of Friends of the Canadian War Museum. “Our veterans have endured and accomplished a great deal on behalf of all Canadians. This is just a small gesture to show our appreciation and respect for these brave men and women.”

“The support of the Friends of the Canadian War Museum to provide free parking for veterans is another fine example of the good work that the organization does in support of veterans and military history,” said Mark O’Neill, Director General of the Canadian War Museum and Vice-President of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “Many people know that FCWM played a major role in establishing the Museum in its current home. But few are aware of the ongoing efforts of many dedicated FCWM members. I hope this latest initiative not only encourages more veterans to visit our Museum, but also encourages Canadians to join the FCWM.”

The Canadian War Museum already provides complimentary admission for Canadian veterans and up to three accompanying family members, and for current members of the Canadian Forces with identification.
