Holiday Programming at the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, December 17, 2007 — The Canadian War Museum is pleased to announce its special programming for the holidays. Covering some 5,000 years of history, the Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history, presenting the personal, national and international dimensions of these times while showing visitors how Canada has been shaped by its participation in various wars and conflicts throughout the ages.

What to do:
All activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from December 22 to January 6.

Gingerbread Soldiers
Over the weekends in December and throughout the winter holiday school break, the CWM will provide visitors with custom-made gingerbread soldiers to decorate. Visitors are encouraged to be inspired by images of military soldiers from the Seven Years’ War. This is a delicious opportunity to free your creativity.

Season’s Greetings
Send some cheer to Canadian Forces members who are away from their families this holiday season. Write your own special greeting to Canadian troops serving overseas on large banners and Christmas cards.

A Soldier’s Kit – A Journalist’s Kit
Museum staff explore the uniforms and equipment worn and used by Canadian soldiers as well as the clothing and equipment used by print, photo and film journalists on the frontlines in Afghanistan.

The Canadian Experience Galleries
The Museum’s Permanent Exhibition presents the military history of Canada from earliest times to the present day, as well as Canada’s history of honouring and remembrance. Each gallery highlights defining moments in Canada’s military history and the ways in which past events have shaped the nation.

Afghanistan: A Glimpse of War

This powerful exhibition goes beyond the headlines to capture Canada’s participation in the international security mission in Afghanistan. Detailing Canada’s efforts to help Afghans rebuild a country shattered by years of war, this exhibition uncovers personal stories drawn from the chaos of battle and the struggle for peace.

War Brides: Portraits of an Era
Lt-Col John McCrae Gallery

An evocative installation of paintings, photos, objects, and commentaries relays the life-changing experiences of some of the 44,000 women who came to Canada at the end of the Second World War as war brides. The contemporary material speaks of love and war, and adventure and hardship in a time of tremendous upheaval.

Stitches in Time
North Corridor

Through 15 richly-coloured quilted artworks, textile artist Johnnene Maddison interprets the Second World War experiences of her mother and other women workers, providing a unique view of the complexity of life on the home front.
