Ottawa, Ontario, May 28, 2009 — 1759–2009: The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, opening today at the Canadian War Museum, marks the 250th anniversary of this event by offering visitors a visual perspective of some of the key sites where the battle was fought.
The exhibition consists of 14 images of historical landscapes in and around City of Québec displayed in locations throughout the Museum. These eighteenth- and nineteenth-century representations provide glimpses of the battlefield as seen by participants. Thirteen are paired with recent photographs of these same landscapes. A special interpretive brochure guides the visitor to the images and related exhibits inside the War Museum, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Gallery of Canada.
“The Battle of the Plains of Abraham is the single-most important event in Canadian military history,” said Mark O’Neill, Director General, Canadian War Museum. “The outcome of the encounter between the forces commanded by Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and James Wolfe shaped the destiny of Canada and Canadians.”
1759–2009: The Battle of the Plains of Abraham opens today and runs until January 3, 2010.
The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada’s military history in its personal, national and international dimensions.
