Project Runway Canada contestants work with Camouflage at the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, Wednesday January 28, 2009Project Runway Canada has returned to Global with an all-new season. Its premiere yesterday was filmed last August at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

The very first challenge faced by the young competing designers was to create a groundbreaking garment out of camouflage fabric. The winning design by Adejoké Taiwo of Calgary, Alberta, will be exhibited in the War Museum’s upcoming summer exhibition, Camouflage, which starts on June 4, 2009.

There’s more to camouflage than initially meets the eye, as visitors will discover with this exhibition that explores the military art of concealment and deception, both as battlefield necessity and as artistic and commercial inspiration. It covers everything from hand-painted dummy heads, designed to draw sniper fire during the First World War, to vast designs for phantom armies and invasion fleets during the Second World War, to sophisticated computer-generated patterns used by today’s militaries.

This extensive exhibition shows how military concealment and deception is a product of human imagination, artistic skill and scientific ingenuity, and how designs, applications and effectiveness have varied greatly over time. Camouflage patterns have evolved into a phenomenon of popular culture, now as likely to adorn children or fashion models as it is to mask soldiers or battleships. It uses clothing, paintings, models, military equipment, and other objects to tell the history of this deceptive art, which makes soldiers disappear, but designer shoes stand out!

Camouflage is presented by the Canadian War Museum in partnership with the Imperial War Museum, from June 4, 2009 to January 3, 2010.

Viewers can catch the encore presentation of Project Runway Canada’s first episode on Saturday, January 31, 9 p.m. ET/PT on Slice.

The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada’s military history in its personal, national, and international dimensions.
