World Press Photo to be presented at the Canadian War Museum for the next three years

Ottawa, Ontario, May 31, 2010 — The Canadian War Museum is proud to announce that it has reached a three-year agreement with the prestigious World Press Photo contest for press photography to host its exhibition in Ottawa.

The Museum hosted the display of winning photographs for the 2008 and 2009 competitions. The three-year agreement, beginning in 2010, will ensure that Museum visitors and the Ottawa-Gatineau’s photography community will be able to enrich their visits and be inspired by this striking display of photographs taken by the best press photographers working today.

“The winning photographs play an important role in encapsulating issues and events of journalistic importance,” said Mark O’Neill, Director General of the Canadian War Museum. “Today’s current events become tomorrow’s history, and these photographs, judged to be the world’s best, will become part of the historical record.”

World Press Photo is a non-profit organization established in the Netherlands in 1955 to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism, and promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information. It is best known for organizing the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition.

The winning photos are selected by an international jury and assembled into a travelling display, which is visited by more than 2 million people in 80 major cities around the world. The Canadian War Museum is one of three Canadian venues on the international tour.

The winning photographs will be on display in the Canadian War Museum’s Lobby from August 6 to 29. The World Press Photo 10 exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Ottawa.

It is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
