Over The Top
– “Hey everyone! There’s a huge rat by the stove” you say.
One of the men, Private Thompson, looks over to his side and sees the repulsive rodent just a few feet over on his right. Slowly, he grabs his bayonet, raises his arm, then brings it slashing down on the vermin.
– “Got him!” he announces triumphantly before retrieving his blade and tossing the carcass of the dead rat outside.
– “That’s the tenth one this week,” pipes up George. “That’s half of what we had last week. Things are getting better.”
– “In the meantime, how about a game of cards?” you ask.
George then pulls out an old deck from his tunic pocket and begins to deal the frayed cards between the two of you while the terrible bombardment continues outside.
