Paralyzed by fear and horrified by the brutal death of your best friend, you remain inside your water-filled crater. Sergeant Wilkes calls out to you, yet you are unable to answer him. He calls out to you again, but all you manage to utter is a faint whimper.
Finally, passing you off as either dead or dying, he emerges from his hole and resumes his dangerous trek towards his own lines.
As the shells fall everywhere around you, all you can do is rock back and forth with your eyes shut tight at the mind-numbing carnage. It is this way that an enemy shell finds you.
Two days later, you are reported as “Missing in action” and are never heard from again.
