Heaving a sigh, you stand and look out into No Man’s Land.
– “I’m coming over to help you!” you shout with a mixture of apprehension and resignation. Turning to face George, you wink as you ask, “Keep an eye out for me, will you old chum?”
– “Go on!” he says, “you’ll be fine!”
Stepping over the parapet, you take a couple of cautious steps into the overwhelming blackness of No Man’s Land.
– “Where are you?” you ask irritably.
There is no answer.
And before you can take another step, a shot rings out in the night and a bullet buries itself into your chest. Slumping to the ground, the last thing you hear is the sound of your friend’s shouted warning as grenades from a German raiding party explode all around you.
